Only 51 claims were based on the results of randomised controlled clinical trials 27 registered RCTs. All cited systematic reviews and pooled analyses, and the majority of RCTs, were at high risk of bias, which biases the estimated outcome in comparisons of interventions. The frequency of health and nutrition claims was similar in low-, middle- and high-income countries. These claims appear on infant formula products and materials promoting them, despite national laws and international guidelines that prohibit them. The results of the study confirm the need for changes to the regulatory framework for breastmilk substitutes to better protect consumers and avoid the harms associated with aggressive marketing of such products.
